This book, published in 1989, is based on Sheila Whale’s 1986 doctoral thesis. The subtitle is “A Study of the Representation of the Family in Private Tombs.” It is, in fact, a look at a select group of 93 Eighteenth Dynasty private tombs that contain significant representations of family, along with an analysis of which family members are shown and how and when and where they are shown. Theban tombs, for obvious reasons, predominate in the study. However, the 93 tombs only date through the reign of Thutmose IV, so a large part of the dynasty is not included in the study.

The first part of the book covers the tombs one by one, including a plan of each tomb from Porter Moss. The second part presents an assessment of the relationships. There are also some line drawings at the end.

Names and titles are given in their transliterated form, not in a modern translation into English, so this may be a difficult book for beginners.
