Gaston Maspero - Œuvres complètes

Гастон Камий Шарл Масперо (1846-1916) е може би най-продуктивният и колоритен учен от плеядата блестящи френски египтолози, работили през втората половина на XIX и началото на XX век. Освен множеството разкопки, изследвания и научни трудове резултат от неговата дейност са и музеите в Египет, съхраняващи археологическите съкровища в тяхната родина, знаменитият Френски Институт по археология на Ориента в Кайро, както и оригинални терминологични нововъведения като наименованието "морски народи", запазило се в науката и до днес. Роден в Париж в семейство на италиански емигранти от еврейски произход, Масперо отрано проявава интерес към древната история на Ориента и по-специално към Египет и йероглификата. По време на обучението си в Екол Нормал Сюпериор той среща Огюст Мариет (1821-1881), като дружбата им и съвместните интереси ги превръщат във великолепен тандем. През 1880 Масперо заминава за Египет като ръководител на Френската археологическа мисия, която развива в мощна и авторитетна изследователска институция - Institut français d'archéologie orientale du Caire. След смъртта на Мариет той заема по волята на египетското правителство и поста генерален директор на Службата по древностите. Освен систематизацията на множество обекти в Египетския Музей, първоначално в Булак а после в Гиза, той провежда и много разкопки. Сред значимите резултати са довършването на работата на Мариет по разкриването на затрупания с 20 м. пясък през вековете сфинкс, както и пет гробници в Сакара с общо над 4000 реда йероглифни надписи. Като администратор Масперо действа твърдо и прагматично. Негова е заслугата за въвеждане на входни такси за посетителите на местните паметници, с коитода се финансира тяхното опазване. Води и безкомпромисна борба с мародерите - крадци на антики, като най-забележителният му случай, съвсем в стил Див Запад е залавянето на местната банда на братята Албд ал- Русул от селото Горна, които впоследствие са принудени да си признаят, че са натрупали огромен брой царски мумии от комплекса в Деир ел Бахри и да ги предадат на властите. Впоследствие мумиите са изложени в Египетския Музей в Кайро. В периода 1886-1899 Масперо се завръща в Париж, където се занимава с преподавателска дейност и пише ценни трудове, превеждани и на други европейски езици.. През 1899 той е повикан отново в Египет за да заеме за втори път поста директор на Службата по древностите, на който пост и се пенсионира през 1914. Вторият му период като администртаор е свързан с разширяване и уреждане на Египетския Музей, реставрация на храмовия комплекс в Карнак, пострадал от земетресение и основаването на множество локални музеи. Той е и един от експертите, създали първите приети и влезли в сила закони срещу кражбите и търговията с антики в страната.
