In German language. The book under review is a comprehensive treatise on the relations between Egypt and Asia during the third and second millennium B.C. With the exception of art, the author deals with every phase of Egypto-Asiatic connections—language and literature, religion and magic, flora and fauna, clothing and utensils, pottery and music, commerce and politics. No one has undertaken such a far-reaching and comprehensive study, although the matter ot relations between ancient Egypt and its neighbors has been a favorite subject of many authors and has often been treated
The work deals with dynastic Egypt from the earliest historical period to the end of th second millennium B.C. The prehistoric period is left untouched because Helck feel that its cultural remains do not allow a coherent interpretation. For the histories periods, however, there is more source material available in which to search fo answers to the questions of how much th Egyptian culture owes to foreign influence and in what way Asiatic influences deter mined the development of Egyptian institutions and the Nile country’s history.
